Electric Bicycle Maintenance Schedule

Electric Bicycle Maintenance Schedule

Specifically for Bikes Converted with the E-BikeKit™ Conversion System

All bicycles require regular maintenance to ensure safety and performance.  Electric bikes or e-bikes converted with the E-BikeKit Conversion System require even more care since they will usually be ridden farther and faster than a conventional bicycle.

Keeping your new E-bike safe and reliable with scheduled care is easy. The list below outlines what you need to do and how often you need to do it to keep your new electric bike running smooth and safe. This list is intended for average riders and daily commuters. Ultimately the level of care should coincide with the amount of miles ridden and the conditions of those rides. The harder you ride, the more you have to care for your bike if you want it to last.

Your hub motor wheel has been hand-built in the USA by a professional wheel builder with experience building wheels with hub motors for electric bike conversions. Every E-BikeKit wheel has been properly tensioned and stress tested during the building process. This ensures that your new E-BikeKit wheel will be true, round and perfect out of the box.

IMPORTANT: Initial “Wheel Tune Up” – Highly Suggested

Spokes will stretch and wheels will settle and loosen within the first 50-100 miles. This is normal and expected.

It is highly suggested that you schedule a “wheel tune up” within your first 50-100 miles of riding on your new wheel. Your local bike shop should be able to service your hub motor wheel, tightening spokes and ensuring the wheel is round and true. The extra torque of a hub motor stretches spokes. This is expected within the first 50-100 miles of riding.  The initial wheel adjustment is most important. Subsequent “wheel tune-ups” are recommended every 3 months or 400 miles, whichever comes first.

Prior to Every Ride:

  • Check your wheels, especially your hub motor wheel(s) before and after every ride to be sure the spokes are tight and the wheels are solid.
  • Check your fork dropouts and your axle hardware and torque arm. Everything should be tight and secure.
  • Ensure you have proper pressure in your tires – under-inflated tires are hard on wheels. Higher tire pressure will increase the range of an electric bike by rolling with less resistance.
  • Check you brakes, cables and wiring – with the battery on test the e-brakes / be sure no wires or cables are hanging loose on the bike. Wires should be tidy internally, inside a bag or attached to the frame with zip ties.
  • Check your cranks, pedal and derailleur.
  • Make sure your battery is charged and secure and that all connections are tight.

After Every Ride:

  • Look over tires for any damage or puncture objects
  • Turn off your battery or disconnect your battery from the controller.
  • Clean the bike and ensure all the parts are clear of dirt and debris

Once a Month:

  • Completely clean the bike, including the drivetrain if necessary.
  • Inspect tires for wear; rotate or replace if needed.
  • Inspect and lubricate brake levers, derailleur and all cables.

Inspect and check for looseness in the:

  • rear rack mounting bolts
  • battery rack mounting bolts – use thread lock on these if necessary
  • battery rack sliding plate – bend edges downward to ensure snug fit to EBK LiFePO4 Packs
  • e-brake/brake and derailleur cable anchors
  • shifter lever mounting bolts
  • e-brake/brake mounting bolts – do not alter brake centering

Every Three Months:

  • Inspect frame and fork for paint cracks or bulges that may indicate frame or part damage; pay particular attention to all frame joints.
  • Visually inspect for bent components: seat post rack or double rear rack, seat rails, seat post, stem, handlebars, chain rings, crank arms, brake calipers and brake levers.
  • Visually inspect all your connectors and connections. Make sure all connectors are rust free and show no signs of corrosion or burning.

Every Six Months:

  • Inspect and readjust bearings in headset, non-electric hub, pedals and bottom bracket (if possible; some sealed cartridge bearings cannot be adjusted, only replaced)

This maintenance schedule is recommended for ensuring your e-bike remains safe and reliable. If you are uncomfortable performing any of the recommended maintenance on your electric bike you should consult a professional for assistance.

The Upside of Converting Your Own Bike To Electric Using A Conversion Kit System

July 1st, 2010

The Benefits of Converting Your Own Bicycle To An Electric Bicycle

One of the best parts of buying a conversion kit over a complete e-bike is that you get to choose the bike you want to convert.  There’s no doubt that choosing the bike is one of the best parts of the conversion process.  Think about it, riding an e-bike is a lifestyle change and choosing the right bike to convert will help you get the most out of your new lifestyle.  With thousands of bikes to choose from, how do you narrow the search? How do you make sure you get the best bike for your needs?  Well here are a few things to consider when shopping for the bike you want to convert.

The Tech Stuff

There are certain specifications that a bike must meet before you can convert it.  First, you need to consider whether you want a front or rear hub motor.  I would recommend keeping this in mind as you shop for bikes and choose the option that you think suites your chosen bike.  You must however remember that a front hub motor requires a steel fork.  An alloy fork is likely to crack creating unsafe riding conditions.  You also need to consider the wheel size and fork spacing (click here for details) but I wouldn’t worry too much about that since our kit fits most standard bikes.   To avoid problems double check the specs before you buy and remember we’re always here to help.  If you’re not sure, check with us first.

The Lifestyle Stuff

Okay, so now you know there are certain specs the bike needs to meet.  What else do you need to consider?  That really depends on how you plan to use your e-bike.  Adding our conversion kit will allow you to use your bike in ways you never would have considered before.  Every time you get into your car think; could I use my e-bike for this trip?  You’ll be able to get up hills, stay cool in the heat, carry heavy loads like groceries or even pick the kids up from day care.  To help narrow the search even more think about these points, they will help guide you onto the right bike.

Terrain: Choosing the right bike for the terrain can help get the most out of your e-bike.  A knobby off road tire will not be as comfortable or efficient as a slick road tire when you’re on the asphalt but a road tire on the path may not provide enough grip.  Think about the uses you’ll have for your e-bike, what does the surface you’ll be riding on look like?  A city dweller’s bike may never see anything but asphalt.  If this is true for you consider a commuter bike.  Commuting by bike has really taken off in the last few years so there are a lot of excellent options in this category.  Commuter bikes offer features like fenders and chain guards which help keep the rider clean and free of grime.  They can also offer stock racking systems that come in handy for mounting your battery and carrying a brief case or a bag of groceries home after work.  If you plan to keep your e-bike at the beach a single speed cruiser with a basket might be perfect.  A hybrid bike with a front fork and rear motor is a great choice for unimproved country roads or path riding.  If your bike will see a lot of path riding and you want a sportier look consider a cyclocross bike.  They will offer a nice balance between road riding and rougher path riding.

How hilly is your ride? An E-BikeKit will completely change the gear ratios needed on your bike.  When riding the toughest of hills you may only need the top 3 gears which means 18 gears of a 21 speed are rendered useless.  Talk to your local bike shop, often times they can alter the gear ratios to fit your riding which can make your new machine even more efficient.

Utility:  Converting your bike with an E-BikeKit conversion system is a lifestyle change.  You may have only used your bike on weekends for exercise but now think about the opportunities your electric bike provides you.  The E-BikeKit system combined with the right bike can really change your life.  If your grocery shopping consists of two bags a week then get a set of panniers (saddle bags) that fit your commuter.  Your bike has now become a grocery getter.  Take it to the farmer’s market across town for some heirloom tomatoes and fresh corn on the cob or head to your favorite disk golf course just outside of the city.  You’ll be able to carry a full set of discs, a cooler and save your energy for the course by throttling your way there.  Maybe you’re grocery shopping looks more like you’re hunkering down for a long winter consider a cargo bike like the Xtracycle or Kona’s Ute.  Cargo bikes enhanced with the E-BikeKit conversion system will let you do anything your SUV does (or used to do).  Also called “longtails” a cargo bike can carry passengers, ten bags of groceries or just about anything else you can strap to it.  They are made with a low center of gravity and a heavy duty frame to take the heavier loads.  Take the cargo bike to the flea market and leave with a coffee table, coat rack, crate of old vinyl records and still have room for your ten year old son.  If the long tail is too much and a single set of panniers won’t be enough then a touring bike could be the answer for you.  Touring bikes are heavy duty and can be loaded with as many bags and racks as you need.

Price: For most of us cost is a big consideration. A person can spend thousands of dollars on a bike which is great, if you’re able to spend that much.  Replacing your car with an e-bike will still save you money.  Realistically though a lot of us don’t have that kind of money to spend.  Consider this; most of the things that make a bike go up in price are designed to make them lighter or easier to pedal.  Adding the E-BikeKit conversion system means you can buy a heavier bike with fewer gears and still have a quality ride.  Try to focus on how well the frame is built and the overall durability of the bike instead of the weight.  Be sure to talk to your sales person about your plans for the bike, you can even direct them to www.e-bikekit.com so they get a better idea of what you will be doing with the bike.  Your e-bike conversion will need special considerations, some of which will save you money when buying the bike you plan to convert.

Customize: Don’t be afraid to customize your bike!!!!  Making upgrades or including add-ons to your bike can really help to enhance your e-bike lifestyle.  The beauty of this system is you can choose a bike that fits you and you can customize it to make it your own.  Bikes are very easy to reconfigure and there is no reason to leave it stock.  If you’re riding 30 miles a day then go for the nice cushy saddle and don’t be afraid to change the bull horn handle bars on your cross bike to something that is more comfortable for you.  Something as simple and inexpensive as changing the knobby tires on your mountain bike to a slick city tire can make a huge difference.   If you’re a serious e-bike commuter then talk to your local bike shop about customizing your gear ratios, you may be able to get more efficiency and extend the charge on your battery.  Making changes to your bike will definitely help to enhance your ride but keep safety in mind.  If you’re not certain you can make the changes on your own then take advantage of your local bike shop.  Their technicians will make sure your upgrade is done properly and will ensure safe and happy riding.

Safety: Most people who convert their bike find they spend many more hours in the saddle.  If you find that your riding extends into the evening or early morning hours be certain to fit your bike with a head light and rear blinky.  Making yourself visible on the road is the best way to avoid accidents.  Also follow the traffic regulations regarding cycling in your state and by all means always wear a properly fitted helmet.

Reflecting on the Gulf

June 4th, 2010

The oil spill in the gulf; what can be said about it? It’s a horrible disaster; 11 men lost their lives and the environmental damage is catastrophic.

This terrible disaster should be a reminder that our dependency on oil and other fossil fuels has dire consequences. I’d like to ask those reading this blog to think about their daily consumption patterns. Could I have walked or road my bike to the store? Does my air conditioner need to run nonstop from the first day of spring? Can I buy more local produce or vacation closer to home?

If you’ve already put steps in place to reduce your consumption, stick with it. If you haven’t, now is an excellent time to start. E-bikes are a great way to change our patterns but they are only a part of the big picture. As we watch and hope for a resolution to the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico; remember the oil flowing into the gulf was destined for the cars, trucks and planes that move this nation. Remember that your decisions do make a difference. Using less oil means less drilling means less potential for disasters like we are seeing in the Gulf.

Does your college bound grad really need a car?

E-Bikes for navigating college campuses!

E-Bikes for navigating college campuses!

Do you have a child heading to college in the fall? An E-Bike may be a smart and economical alternative to a car.

As I write this article I remember my college days with great fondness: scraping up money to buy enough gas to keep my 16 year old Ford Ranger on the road another week, wondering how much money it will take to get it to pass inspection and praying that its ever balding tires would get me home safely for winter break. And how could I forget the 3 mile trek to the freshman parking lot to retrieve it. I was always eternally grateful to my parents for picking up the insurance tab every month and pitching in when it needed a new alternator. I don’t know how I would have survived in the 15 square miles that was my college town without it and without my parents constantly loaning me money to keep it going.

College towns and campuses are a world unto themselves who’s inhabitants rarely travel further than a few miles at a time. In hind site the whole thing sounds absolutely ridiculous, mostly because it was. I’m not sure why but I felt as though I needed a car. Perhaps because it was the only quick and easy way to get anywhere. How else would I have gotten to the discount book store 5 miles away? Back then I’m ashamed to say I wouldn’t have dreamed of riding a bike; but an e-bike would have been a different story.

I could see myself hopping on my e-bike and cruising up the big hill to campus then flying back to my apartment for an afternoon of grilling and throwing horse shoes. Granted college wasn’t all fun but I think I may have made a few more trips back up that big hill to the library if I had an e-bike to help me get there. Who knows that C in art history may have been a B!

Will riding an electric bike make your college bound child a better student?
Possibly, but I’m not going to make that claim. I can say with confidence that it will save them and you a lot of money. Forget insurance, repairs, parking tickets, traffic violations, parking permits, gas oil changes, car payments, tags and everything else that comes with car ownership. If their college campus is anything like the colleges I’ve seen, a car is simply an unnecessary expense.

So consider an E-BikeKit for your grad. We’ll be happy to help you find a bike model that works for you and we’re always here to help you through the install. They may push for a car but before you break down and buy one, take a moment to remember your college days and consider how an E-Bike may be a better alternative. Take it from me… I would have loved one.

E-Bike Conversion Kits are Highlighted on Good Morning America

May 26th, 2010

Electric bike conversion kits offer commuters an affordable, practical and fun way to get to work and Americans are starting to take notice. No other form of transportation offers the convenience and freedom that an electric bike does.

Lambertville, NJ (PRWEB) May 26, 2010 — National Bike to Work Day brought much needed coverage to the idea of using bicycles as an alternate form of transportation. E-bikes in particular got a boost from GMA’s Sam Champion who says “E-bikes are not cheating because we’re talking about using a bike for more than exercise…” During the broadcast of Good Morning America, headlined by the Jonas Brothers, Jason Kraft of E-BikeKit™ continued to press the relevance of the electric bike to the American commuter by reminding them of the 0 carbon emissions and the cost savings of about $1400 a year.

See Good Morning America’s coverage here.

The complete E-BikeKit system includes a wheel with a high quality hub motor, a battery and all the necessary components to convert your bike to electric. The system is engineered to comply with federal guidelines so it requires no insurance or licensing in most states. The price of entry is also getting lower; full systems start at just $598 making them accessible to most of the American work force.

No other form of transportation offers the convenience and freedom that an electric bike does. Typically a car commuter needs to make car payments, buy gas, insurance, oil changes and parking. For all of that expense they are rewarded with traffic jams and congestion. All of that disappears when you ride an e-bike. The cost of ownership is just pennies a day and parking is never an issue. The electric motor makes pedaling easier giving more people the ability to enjoy the health benefits of biking to work and that’s just part of it. In 2009 50% of household trips were less than 3 miles in length (2009 National Household Travel Survey, Bureau of Labor and Statistics); the e-bike rider can make short work of those local trips and soak in some sun while they’re at it.

Established in 2008 the E-BikeKit™ company provides a high quality electric bike conversion system that will make bicycle commuting a real possibility for many people. Collaborating with experts in the fields of cycling, engineering, electronics and EV Battery solutions the E-BikeKit™ company has molded a finished product of the highest quality. The E-BikeKit™ is proving to be the best alternative to expensive electric bikes currently being unveiled in the United States. E-BikeKit’s goal is to bring the electric bike to the mainstream empowering people of all ages and physical abilities to go green and commute clean.

Gaining a Toehold for the E-Bike(Commentary)

January 17th, 2010
Commentary on the article Gaining a Toehold for the E-Bike from the New York Times.com originally published: January 16, 2010 By BRAD STONE:
The E-BikeKit is a conversion kit to convert a conventional bicycle to electric. It’s not a complete e-bike. That said, it is twice the motor and 4 times the battery(life cycles) of the Eneloop  featured in the article. It is also 40% less in price.

Places like walmart would rather sell low-end under-powered e-bikes(made by Currie). They won’t be selling the Eneloop and they don’t want to sell conversion kits that rely on the buyer being intelligent/capable enough to do their own conversions.

The real value of the E-BikeKit conversion system will be best realized by do-it-yourself consumers and local bike shops. For those two groups a high-quality conversion kit offers the ultimate electric bike option.

Either way it’s great to see another electric bike option making news in the NY Times. 2010 should be an amazing year for the e-bike with regard to entering the mainstream consumer market in the United States and even more so towards gaining traction as a viable alternative to the automobile in the minds of Americans.

The Largest All Electric Bike Shop to Open in San Dimas, CA, Dec. 17

December 15th, 2009

The Largest All Electric Bike Shop to Open in San Dimas, CA, Dec. 17

There is a ton of investment money now coming into the e-bike market. This store is about to be the biggest physical location dedicated to offering e-bikes. It appears most of the bikes are straight off the boat from China and there may not be a lot of value added but the fact that the store is opening at all goes to show that the investment community sees green(and I don’t mean environmentalist green) in e-bikes.

This is a good thing for the electric bike market in general. After all a rising tide lifts all boats. There are many smaller e-bike only shops that have opened in the past year and there are a few that have been revolutionary and have been around for years. As more store like the one in this article begin to open and hopefully prove they can be a viable business, even in a poor economy, hopefully those pioneer businesses will begin to gain some popularity too.

This should be a clear sign for the local bike shop owner. I don’t care how pure your shop is and how opposed you are to opening your business to electric bicycle products, if you don’t grab the opportunity that e-bikes present you are going to be missing out. E-Bikes are going to gain in popularity and use. Anyone that has ridden one knows the benefits that come with an electric assisted bike. Local bike shops looking for increased revenues should stay open minded when it comes to electric bikes.

Although the higher quality e-bikes are expensive there is an alternative in the e-bike conversion system. With an e-bike conversion product local bike shops can offer their customers an affordable alternative to owning an e-bike. This saves your customers’ money and it give the local bike shop two opportunities to increase revenues. Not only will the shop make 40% or so on the sale of the kit but they will also be able to charge for the conversion service. And by performing the conversion they can guarantee their customers have a positive e-bike experience.

The investment is coming and the opportunities are great. Are you ready?

Best Buy has made a good decision betting on the future of the electric bike

December 13th, 2009

Best Buy has made a good decision betting on the future of the electric bike but certain things have to happen for them to win both short and long-term.

In the short-term a spike in gas prices or a “new worsening” in the broader economy could increase the sale of low-end e-bikes. In the long-term and if they expect to sell more e-bikes and high-end models, they will have to follow the lead of Trek and others in campaigning for an overhaul in the attitudes of the American consumer with regard to the bicycle as a convenient and comfortable form of transportation.

The majority of Americans still can’t comprehend commuting by bike. They just don’t see a bike as a means of getting from point A to point B. But get them to ride an e-bike and the mind and heart begin to open up to the possibility.

If Best Buy and others can convince enough prospective buyers that bicycles aren’t just for exercise anymore then their early bet on the future of the electric bike may pay big dividends.
